Assessing the equivalence of nonparametric regression tests based on spline and local polynomial smoothers

چکیده
It is widely known that, in a certain sense, a smoothing spline estimate of the regression function is asymptotically equivalent to a kernel regression estimate. However, little information has been available about the equivalence between nonparametric regression tests, based on the smoothing spline and local polynomial regression methods. To assess their relative behaviors and to facilitate illustration, we consider in this paper the “generalized likelihood ratio” (GLR) test statistic, constructed from each type of smoother. For the resulting test statistics, we :rst establish their equivalent forms of the asymptotic distributions, under the null hypothesis. After that, we derive their equivalent optimal rates of smoothing parameters for nonparametric testing. Furthermore, we evaluate their relative asymptotic e;ciency and characterize its relation to the magnitude of the smoothing parameters. Finally, we illustrate the large-sample behaviors of the cubic smoothing spline and local linear regression methods, in the GLR tests, with results from small-scale simulations. c © 2003 Elsevier B.V. Automatic Generalized Nonparametric Regression via Maximum Likelihood
A relatively recent development in nonparametric regression is the representation of spline-based smoothers as mixed model fits. In particular, generalized nonparametric regression (e.g. smoothingwith a binary response) corresponds to fitting a generalized linear mixedmodel. Automation, or data-driven smoothing parameter selection, can be achieved via (restricted) maximum likelihood estimation ...
متن کاملTHE COMPARISON OF TWO METHOD NONPARAMETRIC APPROACH ON SMALL AREA ESTIMATION (CASE: APPROACH WITH KERNEL METHODS AND LOCAL POLYNOMIAL REGRESSION)
Small Area estimation is a technique used to estimate parameters of subpopulations with small sample sizes. Small area estimation is needed in obtaining information on a small area, such as sub-district or village. Generally, in some cases, small area estimation uses parametric modeling. But in fact, a lot of models have no linear relationship between the small area average and the covariat...
متن کاملAdditive Coefficient Modeling via Polynomial Spline
A flexible nonparametric regression model is considered in which the response depends linearly on some covariates, with regression coefficients as additive functions of other covariates. Polynomial spline estimators are proposed for the unknown coefficient functions, with optimal univariate mean square convergence rate under geometric mixing condition. Consistent model selection method is also ...
متن کاملNON-POLYNOMIAL SPLINE FOR THE NUMERICAL SOLUTION OF PROBLEMS IN CALCULUS OF VARIATIONS
A Class of new methods based on a septic non-polynomial spline function for the numerical solution of problems in calculus of variations is presented. The local truncation errors and the methods of order 2th, 4th, 6th, 8th, 10th, and 12th, are obtained. The inverse of some band matrixes are obtained which are required in proving the convergence analysis of the presented method. Convergence anal...
